Please let us highlight some of the pros and cons of choosing to live in a log house, in order to prevent any disappointment on receiving the log house you may have dreamt of.
The beneficial effect of wood houses on health and the environment is well known, and this is due to the materials used and the construction technology applied. The special ambiance, the scent of the wood logs, the ideal humidity conditions of the interior create a pleasant and calm living area that is ideal for your perfect rest — an important factor in our stressful world. The positive physiological effects that log houses have are unmatched by other, rigid construction materials like concrete, plasterboard or chemicals. Log houses may be the ideal choice whether it’s a wood holiday house or a family home designed to serve for a lifetime.
However, it’s important to know that a finished log house is not final in shape, as wood will still move for a while, which is due to the inherent pliability of wood, as well as the humidity of the air. It’s as if the wood was still alive; it even produces noises like creaking and squeaking. This is a phenomenon called settling, which may also have undesirable effects, some of which can be deemed as faults. An example of this is cracking, which is a result of the wood logs drying, and which can be prevented by the necessary professional experience in log house construction. A log house free from cracking can only be built using logs made from layered or glued laminated timber, albeit the method can triple building costs. It can also happen during settling that a door gets stuck here or a window is jammed there. Such faults are always fixed by the construction company after delivery. Settling may take up to 3 years, depending on various environmental factors.
Another downside is that a finished log house cannot be later extended or enlarged, as there is no professional way of attaching a new wall to an existing one. As there are several different methods of building log houses, it is advisable for every one planning to order a wood home to familiarize themselves with the methods of more than one log house building company, as their equipment and manufacturing methods can be significantly different. We usually don’t publicize the details of our construction method, but we’ll be happy to show you on request. It is our belief that sound timber, precise work and a conscientious expert are equally necessary to make the building a work of art. If your log house is given the necessary supervision and care, it will serve as a safe and warm home for you and your family for decades.
We hope that showing the positives and negatives of log houses would stir your interest and intrigue you into making an informed decision for your and your family’s benefit.
